Abstract

This standard applies to the determination of total zirconium oxide and hafnium oxide in yttria-stabilized zirconia (or composite yttrium-zirconium ceramic powder), cerium-zirconium composite oxides, gadolinium ytterbium zirconate, and scandia-stabilized zirconia, within a mass-fraction range of 24.00% to 96.00%. Samples are acid-dissolved and separated with ammonia, after which zirconium and hafnium are precipitated with mandelic acid in hot hydrochloric acid medium and determined by ignition and gravimetry. Rare earth oxides entrained in the ignited residue are determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and deducted. The standard specifies reagents, instruments, test procedures, result calculation, parallel testing, and precision requirements.
