Fact Sheet: Transport of Dangerous Goods – Regulations for the Carriage of Vehicles Powered by Lithium-ion, Lithium Metal and Sodium-ion Batteries (UN 3556, 3557, 3558)

This applies to the road transport in Australia of UN 3556 lithium-ion battery-powered vehicles, UN 3557 lithium-metal battery-powered vehicles, and UN 3558 sodium-ion battery-powered vehicles listed in the ADG Code Dangerous Goods List. Consignors must ensure that installed batteries comply with section 2.9.4 and, in most cases, have passed UN 38.3 type testing; removed batteries must be transported under the relevant battery entry. Vehicles transported in packaging that cannot be readily identified as containing lithium or sodium-ion batteries must bear label model 9A. Damaged or defective vehicles must be assessed for battery safety impacts; batteries that can be safely removed must be transported under Special Provision 376, while vehicles whose batteries cannot be removed or whose status cannot be verified require additional precautions and compliance with directions from competent authorities or emergency services.
