Abstract

This standard applies to sulfur dioxide condensation corrosion testing of materials or products with metallic and other inorganic coatings, for evaluating corrosion resistance affected by coating pores, cracks, blistering, and defects in alloy composition or treatment. It specifies requirements for test chambers, temperature and humidity control, sulfur dioxide introduction, and safety, as well as requirements for specimen cleaning, edge protection, exposure arrangement, and area control. Deionized or distilled water shall be added to the chamber and sulfur dioxide introduced; testing shall be conducted at 40 ± 3 °C and relative humidity above 95%, with water and atmosphere replaced every 24 hours. After testing, specimens shall be cleaned as specified and evaluated and reported based on appearance, corrosion defects, mass changes, or performance changes.
