Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 on the reduction of methane emissions in the energy sector as regards the postponement of certain obligations
Abstract
The proposal applies to Union producers and importers placing crude oil, natural gas and coal on the Union market. It would amend Regulation (EU) 2024/1787 by postponing until 31 May 2029 the deadline for importers to demonstrate that non-Union supply contracts are subject to equivalent methane monitoring, reporting and verification measures; postponing until 5 August 2029 the initial reporting deadline for methane intensity by producers and importers; and postponing until 5 August 2031 the obligation to demonstrate compliance with maximum methane-intensity values. Relevant operators would still be required to report annually to Member State competent authorities or explain reasonable efforts undertaken.
